While using a computer, you may encounter files with unknown extensions. You can look up unknown extensions on Google or ask a friend what program you should use, but a better solution is to use File Helper. This lightweight application will scan your entire hard drive for files that are not associated with a program. It will also suggest the best program for specific file types and it allows you to download the programs right away.

File Helper can be used on Windows XP, as well as 32 and 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Vista. The software's hardware requirements are modest, so you can run it even on outdated machines. The setup file is 5 MB and the installation procedure is fast and easy.

All you have to do is click a button, on File Helper's shiny interface and let the application scan your computer. The scanning process takes only a few seconds. When it is done, all unknown or unassociated files types on your computer will appear as large icons, on the left half of the interface.

Selecting a listed extension will display a short description, about the file type and its corresponding program, on the right half of the window. You can also find a list of files, in the selected format, beneath the short description.

Once you locate the extension you are looking for, you may click a Download button, on the right side of the interface, to download a program for that file type. The application will retrieve the selected file type's corresponding program from a huge online database.

Pros

You can identify unknown, old or rare file formats in just a few seconds. The application is capable of scanning your entire hard drive for these file types. It also allows you to download the necessary programs to open the unknown file types.

Cons

You can't download any programs while using File Helper in demo mode. With File Helper, you will always know what program you should use for almost any kind of file.
